So, the First Step is Wedging?

I once asked a senior potter, "How do you make two mugs the same size?" His reply, while humorous, it was also true. He replied, "You make a thousand of them!"

While experience is vital, two other steps are also important, weighing the raw material and preparing the clay by "wedging". Wedging is an industry term for manipulating the clay to align the clay molecules and remove any air bubbles. While wedging might look similar to kneading dough. But while the movements may look the same, the whole purpose of kneading dough is to trap air bubbles, while wedging clay removes air bubbles!
